Contact the DVLA on their national telephone number 0300 790 6801 for local enquiries about driving licences and vehicle tax payments previously handled by their Birmingham office.
Local DVLA offices were closed as part of a cost-cutting regime finalised in December 2013, including the office located in the Garretts Green area of Birmingham.
New DVLA contact number (driving licences) – 0300 790 6801
Contact the new DVLA Swansea office on their national phone number 0300 790 6801 to apply for your first provisional driving licence and to report your licence as missing. Previously you may have to have visited your local office in Birmingham prior to being accepted however as part of the centralisation process you are now able to complete your licensing application over the phone or over the internet. You should also call this helpline for information on how you can surrender your licence if you are no longer capable of driving or to get a modified licence if you need to drive a specially-adapted vehicle in response to a medical condition.
One of the benefits of closing local departments such as DVLA Birmingham then moving to a central office is that they were able to extend their previous opening hours. This means you can now phone the DVLA from 8am-7pm Monday-Friday and 8am-2pm Saturday to discuss your driving licence and vehicle registration enquiries. Furthermore calls to their national office will continue to be charged at the same rate as phoning the old 0121 area code phone number.
Contact the DVLA about vehicle registration and tax – 0300 790 6802
Phone the national DVLA vehicle registration office on their UK helpline number 0300 790 6802 as opposed to contacting the now defunct Birmingham team to pay your car tax, to notify them that you are importing a vehicle into the country or to export a motorcycle. Similarly you may call this number to register your car as off the road by getting a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) which means you will no longer pay tax, however note that your vehicle subsequently cannot be used on public highways. If you have misplaced your current vehicle log book or V5C certificate then please dial this number to get a replacement sent to your home address.
